Writing Magic: Creating Stories that Fly by Gail Carson Levine
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Levine, Gail Carson. 2006. Writing Magic: Creating Stories That Fly. New York: HarperCollins Publishers.

Ever dreamed of expressing your creativity and ideas through writing and publishing a book, but believed it was a task too enormous to accomplish? Writing does not need to be an insurmountable mission, Newberry Honor author Gail Carson Levine shares her best tips and tricks for writing that will help you overcome obstacles and craft your best writing potential.

What I knew before reading this book about writing was limited to writing assignments for course work, and some small creative writing endeavors I have done over the years for personal enjoyment. I have never taken a formal or informal course in creative writing, only advanced courses on compositional writing during my undergrad. What I wanted to know was simply more about the creative writing process, all aspects of it. Since this is a topic I am interested in, any information I can glean about this subject is welcomed, but mostly as my annotation states, I wanted to learn tips and tricks of great writing - getting ideas down, developing these ideas, and composing these thoughts into text. This book was extremely informative, the one fundamental concept that I learned about this topic is to

SAVE EVERYTHING. :)

Whatever I write, even if the class is over or I think what I wrote is garbage, I should keep it because it could always develop into something important and useful later. I also learned not to give up and let others bring you down, keep pursuing writing and practice writing by writing, as well as, reading. Finally, I learned that it is important to have something to take down notes on if an idea comes to me, a notebook by my bed or a notebook on my phone because ideas are sparks that can ignite into something amazing!
